REPORTING PROBLEMS OBTAINING MEDICINES

In recent months, pharmacies have not only faced substantial cuts to their income, they have also faced a significant out-of-stocks situation, when ordering medicines for patients, and rising prices, sometimes resulting in dispensing at a loss.

We have received a number of reports about the extra time pharmacists have spent sourcing medicines for customers and from General Practitioners, who cannot understand why one pharmacy has some residual stock while others have none left and cannot get any more.

This results in patient, pharmacist and GP dissatisfaction.

We are asked to report out of stock medicines that are causing concerns for you and for patients and prescribers. They may also result in you being put at a financial disadvantage.

Please see below a link to the Stock Shortage Notification Scheme (reporting form) on the PSNC website. By reporting your difficulties, these can then be collated together with other reports at a national level and presented to the DH for action on their part. It is unacceptable for patients to be put in this situation and for you to be sometimes dispensing at a loss because of this situation.
